If you haven’t heard about the Jeffree Star Cosmetics Mystery Boxes, then you must not have been on the internet within the last three weeks because it’s been sparking controversy across social media sites like YouTube and Twitter.
At 8PM PST on Thanksgiving night, the Jeffree Star Cosmetics website released a limited quantity of mystery boxes ranging in prices from $30, $80 and $175 with the cheapest box promising 6 products and the most expensive promising 10. Naturally, they sold out within the hour, thus commencing the waiting game.
But what some that paid for expedited shipping didn’t know was that, it could take upwards to a week to arrive with some products arriving broken. Of course, sparking endless tweets and videos claiming that Jeffree Star Cosmetics had scammed buyers.
I personally opted for the $30 box with free shipping because ya’ girl’s a baller on a budget. I received my box 8 days later on December 7th with some mixed feelings.

When you add all these products together you get a hefty bill of $116. When you account for taxes, I spent a total of $32. For what I paid vs. what I got, I legit got waaay more than I paid for. Just my bill alone would typically only cover the Mint Condition Skin Frost. Where my mixed feelings come in is the shades given.
The Review
With my delicious caramel skin tone (thanks to my Salvadoran heritage) and my tendency to play it safe with my makeup, shades like Ice Cream Blvd. and especially Can’t Relate are a bit outside of my comfort zone. I mean, honestly, the whole box is. Green highlight and bright orange and purple lips? Not what I’m used to. But with the bold and daring looks that Jeffree puts together himself, I assumed I was going to get some intense shades and I was looking forward to it. I felt that the $30 price tag that came with trying new colors was worth it. But I was left feeling a little thwarted with the entire box.
Don’t get me wrong at all though, I don’t feel scammed in the slightest bit. I got MUCH MORE than I bargained for with this box and my disappointment with the shades sent says nothing about the quality of the products. In fact, the products are some of the best I’ve tried. Bright, opaque and long lasting. Everything you want out of your cosmetics! While the liquid lipsticks were a bit daunting for my lips and since they’re completely eye-safe, I’ve already stepped out of my comfort zone a bit and worn them as bright eyeliners!
